Educating Kids and Schools for a Better Environment

Summertime is here and kids are out of school, so it is the perfect time for parents and kids to get serious about our environment and keeping it a safe and beautiful place to enjoy for many years to come.

According to a recent article in THE Journal by Chris Riedel entitled, "Green Schools: The Color of Money" school districts have finally discovered that going green can mean financial rewards.

It is not just about turning off lights, changing light bulbs or shutting off idle computers -- it is about rethinking the way things are done at every level from companies, to schools, or even at home.

Schools need to analyze everything from natural gas and electricity use to heating and air conditioning systems, along with maintenance and construction procedures. It is important for any organization to develop long-term plans.

One group - the Taunton Public Schools - contacted a group known as Energy Education, who helps develop energy conservation programs for U.S. school districts with the goal of converting dollars spent on energy to dollars spent on education. Taunton retained this group to help find ways to decrease its energy consumption and their bottom line of expenses.

One interesting and simple example mentioned in the article; typical school vending machines cost up to $450 a year to run, but by using a motion sensor that shuts down the machine's compressor when there is no activity, schools can save up to two-thirds with each machine, and most schools districts have from 40 to 50 vending machines.

In just two years, the Energy Education program helped Taunton save more than $660,000 in energy costs, including costs on electricity, natural gas, fuel oil, and water. Everything from disabling vending machine lights to managing irrigation played a role in savingsand our environment.

Students everywhere in schools across the country are also beginning to get the message about taking responsibility for helping to save the planet. To help parerets out, following is a list of environmentally inspired websites for kids to take a look at this summer:

- Environmental Education for Kids - An online magazine for grades four to eight created by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, which has short articles and activities about animals, plants and environmental issues.

- EPA Student Center - This Environmental Protection Agency site includes information on a wide range of environmental issues. Kids can click on "Fun Activities" to play environmental games.

- Be, Live, Buy Different - A project of the World Wildlife Fund and the Center for a New American Dream, the site was created to inform young people about how everything we buy and use affects biodiversity. Take the Buy-O-Diversity Quiz!

- The Green Squad - An NRDC website that's also available in Spanish shows you how to identify and solve environmental problems. You can can explore a colorful virtual school room by room, and use the mouse to locate potential hazards. Parents and teachers will find the site useful as it offers a wide range of resources on the environment.

- The Greens - Izz and Dex are green animated characters that not only have green skin, but they have lots of great ideas about protecting the planet. Visit this site to watch short cartoons about environmental issues Nature Challenge for Kids.

- Nature Challenge for Kids - a David Suzuki Foundation website place for all kinds of fun activities starting with ten simple ways you can protect nature, followed by four challenge activities that offer first-hand experience with the natural world.

Remember to join community projects this summer in your town to help pick up garbage at the beach, or simply at a nearby park. Teaching our children about the importance of the environment is a job that both parents and teachers must share -- at home and at school.

Eat, Pray, and Love Lessons Christians Can Learn to Live More Purposefully Today

Although I have yet to read the book, "Eat, Pray, and Love" I did see the movie and really enjoyed it. Watching the movie generated some of my own ideas about how I, as a Christian, can incorporate some of these great disciplines in my own life. I left the theater thinking that even if we had the luxury of taking a year-long excursion to far off places, it really isn't necessary to learn the life lessons so eloquently depicted on the author's journey. Whether you are a Christian, or of any other faith, these life lessons can benefit us all. Below are some Eat, Pray, Love Lessons we can all learn from.

Eat

Eat foods that nourish your body, satisfy your palette, and build relationships. The author's first destination took her to Italy, where the art of food is celebrated and cherished. Forgetting about calories, food labels, and all those little "shoulds and should nots" blaring on every health and fitness magazine in America, she embraced every bite with love and enthusiasm. In almost every scene she is seen eating full-course meals with her new-found friends, engaging in heart-felt conversation, and enjoying every bite. No eating in front of the television, in the car, on the go, or pulling out of fast food joints. And the one time we see her eating alone, she prepares her food with love and intention. While sitting on the floor she eats her beautifully prepared meal with her full attention wearing her newly purchased lingerie. Eating was no longer just for health, nutrients, or even to suppress unresolved emotions. No, eating became a part of life, something that added value to her day, something that she could look forward to as an extension of who she wanted to be.

So how can we eat with more passion and substance without taking a trip to a foreign country? First of all, change your perspective about food. Instead of looking at food only for as a source of health and necessity, make meal time a celebration and daily ritual. As often as you can, prepare meals at home, set the table with favorite plates, tablecloths, and utensils, and make dining a family affair. Make it a rule that everyone must sit at the table for a set amount of time, even if they finish before everyone else. Don't allow meal time to be just another daily task, but a time to reconnect with family. If you live alone, frequently invite friends over to break bread together. You can cook healthy foods that are satisfying and good for you too. Browse through cookbooks and online to find healthy versions of your favorite meals and at least several times a week, go all out. Not only will your food be healthier for you, you'll enjoy eating more, while satisfying our cravings for human connection and intimacy, something so many of us are missing today.

Pray

Spend time with God in prayer and meditation. The author's second destination took her to India, where she would learn the art of meditation to conquer her fears and quiet her restless mind. Initially she failed in her quest to be still and stop thinking. Thoughts about her past mistakes and even her present circumstances plagued her mind constantly. She was in the Mecca of the meditation world and couldn't find inner peace. Just as it eluded her, it eludes many of us today. Fortunately, with the encouragement of others and the constant practice, meditation became a part of her daily life that helped to keep her balanced and centered. As a Christian, you may shy away from practices like meditation; however, meditation is clearly supported by scripture and Jesus himself. We are told in the Bible that it was Jesus daily custom to find a solitary place and spend time with God. And before Jesus started his public ministry, he spent 40 days and nights in the wilderness with God. Joshua 1:8 tells us to meditate on God day and night if we want success in life.

Yet meditation has gotten a bad rap. Of course, there are types of meditation that Christians want to avoid. However, meditation is just another tool that can help us grow in our relationship with God. By learning to quiet our mind we create an environment to "Be still and know God" in a more intimate way. By meditating on the word of God, we allow His word to inwardly transform us. By meditating on God's presence, we learn to abide with God and learn to worship Him in Spirit and in truth. So how does prayer differ from meditation? I have often heard that prayer is talking to God, but meditation is giving God an opportunity to speak to us. Many Christians know how to pray very well, but few know how to listen and hear the still small voice of their Heavenly Father.

Although the author learned how to meditate by studying under the spiritual gurus of India, we can learn to meditate on God anytime and anywhere and get the same results. There are also many forms of meditation that are suitable for Christians from purchasing a guided Christian meditation CD, meditating on God's word, dwelling in God's presence, or even practicing centering prayer. You can explore many types of Christian meditation that will enhance your life and relationship with God. Making prayer and meditation a part of your daily life is all you need to add more meaning to your life and daily experiences.

Love

Love God with all your heart, soul, and strength and love your neighbor as yourself. The third destination of the author was the beautiful island of Bali. I don't suspect that when she arrived there she knew that love was right around the corner. In fact, it ran her off the road. Her soon to be beloved knocked her off her bike as she rode through the countryside. However, because of a failed marriage, her fear of losing herself, or making another mistake, she almost let love sip through her fingers. It was the medicine man she visited frequently who told her that "love" is a part of a balanced life. Up until this point I think she believed that she didn't deserved love, she wasn't good at love, or that true love didn't really exist.

I know that many single women and men would love to go to an exotic island and meet the man or woman of our dreams. Yet there is a part of me that believes it is difficult to love another person without first loving God and loving yourself. As a result of loving God we learn valuable lessons about love. Corinthians chapter 13 tells us that love is patient, love is kind, it is not rude, it is not self-seeking, and it always hopes for the best. In fact, true love can never fail; however, we fail when we refuse to operate out of a spirit of love.

You have heard that you can't give away something that you don't have. Love is no different. When we learn to love ourselves that love flows out to all who surround us, male, female, young, or old. In fact, the scripture tells us that in order to love our neighbor we must first love ourselves. We love ourselves when we take the time to examine our hurts and shortcomings and then offer them God for internal healing and wholeness. We love ourselves when we learn who we are in Christ and set loving boundaries that protect us from the harmful intentions of others. We love ourselves by taking the time to nurture our inner spirit, physical health, and emotional well-being, and when we are true to our own needs and desires with the courage to integrate them into our presence situation. Of course, this will always be an ongoing process, but the healthier we are mentally and spiritually, the more successful we will be in attracting and maintaining loving relationship that will flourish and grow.

As you learn to be patience, kind, tolerant, and trusting of yourself and your needs, you are learning the traits that will cultivate a strong love relationship. The author truly loved herself when she took this long-expedition to heal her life and find her place in the world. We can do the same right from your own home.

Ask God to bring to your attention any areas where you are being unloving to yourself or others and then ask Him to help you heal in these areas. Don't give up on love. Whether you are already married or praying for God to bless you with a mate, keep love flowing in your life and relationships. Following these steps will help you to incorporate the lessons of Eat, Pray, and Love in your life starting today.

Easy Tips To Cure Athlete's Foot

Fungi love to take residence in nooks and crannies that are cramped, damp and stuffy, like the areas between your toes. Once these microorganisms have taken territory over a patch of skin on your foot, they would really try their best to stay and take root. Sometimes, when you think that you ...Fungi love to take residence in nooks and crannies that are cramped, damp and stuffy, like the areas between your toes. Once these microorganisms have taken territory over a patch of skin on your foot, they would really try their best to stay and take root. Sometimes, when you think that you have eliminated these skin squatters, they would end up showing in a different place, such as your toenail.

People with athlete's foot will tell you that treating this condition can be very tricky. Just using a topical cream for a couple of days will not be enough to get rid of the nasty fungal infection because fungus can penetrate deep beneath the skin, which topical treatments cannot entirely reach. However, the roots are also not deep enough for oral anti-fungal drugs to work fast. So if you are being plagued by on-and-off athlete's foot problem, just read on and discover how you can get rid of your smelly problem for good.

Be The Queen (or King) of Clean

The first thing you need to do in order to beat your fungi problem is to follow proper hygiene always. If you are prone to athlete's foot, be sure to dry your feet first before wearing your shoes. It is also advisable to refrain from using the same pair of shoes for two consecutive days. Give your shoes some time to breathe.

A Little Yogurt Won't Hurt

Aside from the stench, other annoying symptoms of athlete's foot are redness, flaking and itchiness. To help ease the symptoms, you can put plain yogurt on the affected area as often as you want. A small amount of yogurt will surely soothe itchiness and redness.

Beat Fungus With Astragalus

For centuries now, people have been using astragalus to provide relief for their fungus woes. Just use this fungi-killer herb three times a day for 1 to 2 months to get the most out of the strength of astragalus. However, before using any herbs or alternative therapies, you need to seek advice from a doctor or a naturopathic.

Do Magic With Garlic

Garlic is one extraordinary bulb because it does not only have properties that fight bacteria and virus, but it is also helpful in your battle against fungi. You can dab a couple of drops of garlic oil on the problematic areas on your feet 30 minutes before you go to sleep. Just make sure that you put on some socks after rubbing oil on your feet so that you will not soil your bed sheets.

You can be sure that this oil will penetrate the deepest roots of the fungi even if it is only topically applied. However, you should make sure that you continue the treatment for two weeks to one month, even when you think the fungal infection has already cleared away.

It is also a wise idea to eat raw garlic to help speed up the healing process. You can be assured that garlic component allicin, which is responsible for eliminating fungi, is unadulterated in the raw form of this herb. About four cloves a day in four to six months is effective in totally eliminating the roots of your foot problem.

Bar The Sugar

If you want to encourage the proliferation of fungus on your skin, then go ahead and eat plenty of sugary foods. However, if you are getting tired of having foul-smelling feet, then you should go easy on your sugar intake, particularly the refined kind.

Individuals suffering from athlete's foot usually have other fungal skin problems. The most common fungi woe that people with tinea pedis, which the scientific name of athlete's foot, could also suffer from is toenail fungus. This triggers the yellowing and crumbling of nails. There are many anti-fungal creams for nail fungus. However, one product that is truly effective in beating nail fungal infections is Somasin. Easy Tips for Faster Reading

How to get more out of a trade journal/magazine

Tip # 1: Browse and Play

Browse through the publication--frontwards or backwards--so that you get to know what's in it and where it's located. Notice the layout and how the information is presented. Notice the table of contents and any special sections. Don't be too serious--it's best to be playful.

Notice which articles pique your interest, but don't read them yet. Catch titles, subtitles, pictures, and charts. When you find something interesting, think of how you can use it--reading for information should be a goal seeking activity. Decide how much time you can afford, and then go for it.

Follow this tip and your reading will become purposeful, active, questioning and goal oriented...this means you save time and get more information from the time you spend reading!

Tip # 2: Locate the Most Important Articles...and Be Smart

Get 80% of the information in 20% of the time by simply reading the title, subtitle, bold type, last paragraph and first paragraph--spend only 30-45 seconds. Then reflect on the relevance of the information for you. If it is important to read more, go to the next step. Otherwise, find another article.

Take 1-2 minutes to skim through the article to find the core idea. Know what is being expressed. Do you need more details? If not, find another article.

Read lightly and flexibly. Know what you need. Slow down to fulfill your purpose, answering questions that are most important to you. Since very few words carry the meaning, speed up to pass redundant or useless information.

Tip #3: File important articles, pass them on, or re-cycle the publication.

How to read the reports you love to hate.

In just 11-13 minutes you can get 80% of what you must know from even the most difficult reports. Here's how you can do it now, quickly and easily:

At the end of your work day, take 2 minutes to glance through the report's layout, table of contents and ending. Decide on 3 things you must know from this report.

STOP! Do not read further. Flip the pages in front of your eyes like a fan 2 or 3 times. Make a guess where you will find your answers. Leave it alone until tomorrow.

In the morning take no more than 7 minutes to search for and read the key points you felt you had to know.

Double check to determine if there are any additional "life or death" needs associated with this report. If yes, spend no more than 4 more minutes now and maybe 5-7 minutes the next day.

How to keep up with the Daily News in 15 minutes

Tip 1: Disregard redundant information to save time now.

News is redundant: previewed yesterday...detailed today...summed up tomorrow.

When reading news, whether from a report, newspaper, magazine or newsletter, skip what you already know. Make sure to you get the new information you need.

Look for the most pertinent information to match your purpose for reading. A strong purpose immediately increases your reading speed and comprehension. Be clear about what you want, then quickly search to find it. Don't just read for the sake of reading unless you have chosen to pass leisure time.

Give yourself just 10-15 minute in the morning to review the news. This time constraint gently forces you to get focused. Come back in the evening to get whatever you "have to" or "want to." You may discover it to be ancient history by evening.

Tip 2: Read headlines and first paragraphs only.

Review headlines and select articles you want to read based on your interest or purpose for reading. Read the first paragraph to preview the article.

Reporters present 80% of the key information in the opening paragraph. The subsequent supporting text should be read only as needed. Follow this strategy:

Ask yourself what other specific details you want. Let it go if there are none.

Skim the article for the desired details. "Dip" into the article and read those paragraphs. Don't read all the words unless you have the luxury of unlimited time.

When finished with an article, go on to the next. This whole process should not take more than 10-15 minutes.

How to Instantly Improve Your Reading Efficiency

Before reading a difficult piece of writing, take a few moments to close your eyes and relax while taking two or three deep breaths. Say to yourself that you can read with full concentration, recognize key information, and achieve high comprehension quickly to accomplish your needs. Believe you can, and you will.

This may simply sound like "positive mental attitude." Yet if you do not purposefully affirm the positive, you may be shutting off your true capacities by subtle anxieties about the task.

For example, if the material is dense and difficult to read, any anxiety about getting through it can cause lowered performance. The secret is to see the material simply as new and different, not dense and difficult...and be relaxed about it. Early confusion can create curiosity that guides you to search for and recognize the information you need. Your comprehension and overall reading performance can increase--all with just a few seconds of preparation.

Dreams Come True Dolphin Watching in the Wild

Dreams Come True Dolphin Watching in the Wild

Dreams Come True Dolphin Watching in the Wild

Humans have always had a very special affinity with dolphins, and an encounter with these playful, intelligent creatures in the wild is a real "bucket list" experience for many. These days it's also a very accessible dream and, even though a sighting can never be guaranteed on dolphin watching holidays, magic happens if youre in the right location at the right time...
The following destinations have become popular for dolphin watching holidays for very good reason.

Bermuda

Bermuda is probably more renowned for its Humpback Whale watching opportunities, as the ocean giants make their way to their Arctic breeding grounds in the spring months, but the South Shore coastline is also the playground of the beautiful Bottlenose Dolphin. The good news is that sightings are not limited to spring, and they can be seen frolicking in the surrounding seas regularly throughout the year. Because a 200-mile zone around the archipelago is protected under the Fisheries Act, it provides a safe habitat for cetaceans, and as a bonus the likelihood of sightings of Northern and Blue Whales is also high.

Croatia

Croatia may not be the first place that comes to mind for dolphin watching holidays, but it should be. The lush island of Loinj, situated in the Kvarner Gulf, is renowned for its abundance of marine life and, while it may be small (measuring just 74 square miles), it is also a paradise for a host of unique plant species.

The surrounding oceans provide the ideal habitat for the Bottlenose Dolphin, and several communities have made their home around Loinj and numerous other smaller islands in the gulf. In fact, the region has become an important wildlife research site under the auspices of the Blue World Institute's Adriatic Dolphin Project. The data collected by the project has made a vital contribution to our understanding of the species on a global scale.

Top Tip: If, after seeing these wonderful mammals in their natural habitat on a cruise around the island, you're inspired to contribute to their conservation, you can visit the Marine Education Centre in Veli Loinj, which is facilitated by the Blue World Institute, and join the "adopt a dolphin" programme.

Jersey

A little closer to home (and a bit of a surprise to many people), Jersey is an up-and-coming destination for dolphin watching holidays, with the number of sightings throughout the Channel Islands increasing every year.

The Common and Bottlenose species can both be encountered in the coastal waters surrounding Jersey, along with a huge array of other marine life. This includes a multitude of seabirds, grey seals and the Harbour Porpoises, which are a little more elusive as they spend less time at the surface. A boat cruise around the Jersey archipelago is by far the best way of exploring this unique coastal landscape. As you cruise above submerged reefs and navigate countless tiny islands, the glimpse of a dorsal fin adds an indelible memory to a truly unforgettable experience.

For wildlife lovers, there's not much that can surpass an inspirational encounter with these enchanting, super intelligent mammals in their natural environment just as they should be.

Don't Sell An eBook on eBay Unless There Is Something In It For You.

Copyright 2006 John Thornhill
A lot of eBay sellers sell other peoples eBooks on eBay, while that is fine they are sometimes selling the wrong eBooks. Once the sale is made that's it. No further money can be made from that sale. What if there was a chance of making money over and over again from the sale of one eBook that was written by someone else? How cool would that be? Well it can be done, what you need to be selling is brandable eBooks. This means some of the eBook contents can be branded with your own details, this is usually in the form of a link to your website (this can be your eBay store if you don't have a website) or an affiliate link leading to a sales page for the authors products.

I am not joking when I say this but I sometimes receive commissions and I can't remember how or why the commission was received. What I do know is it was either from one of my own eBooks or an eBook I have branded with my own details.

Just imagine if you had 2 eBooks on the same subject and both promoted the same product, would you rather sell the eBook with your affiliate details embedded or the one without? That's a no brainer isn't it? So what I would suggest is you go and search Google for 'brandable ebooks' and see how many eBooks you can add to your eBay business. You will find there are 100s that can be downloaded and branded free.

TIP! Make sure the eBooks you brand can only be branded once. Most will have a short statement or a document included with the eBook explaining what to do. Once the eBook has been branded by you check to see if the eBook can be branded further. If it can still be branded stay away, all that will happen is your customer will brand the eBook and sell it on with their details embedded instead of yours.

It also helps to check out the product you will be promoting, if it?s a clickbank product make sure you will get at least 50% commission, also, visit the sales page and check the sales copy does a good job. You don?t want to be promoting a product that won?t sell. Then visit the order page and make sure your clickbank name appears at the bottom of the page, if not there is a problem with the link and you won?t get the credit.

Also, don?t expect overnight results. It could take a few Months to see any real results but once the payments start to come in you won?t be able to stop them. Just make sure you sell your eBook at least 50 times on eBay and you should be fine.

So there you go, so simple yet so effective, so get branding, get selling and get earning.
